Coat Colors: Only Two Bases

The 'E' Gene. It was named the "Extension" locus because the dominant allele, E, "extends" the eumelanin (black pigment). The recessive allele, e, blocks the eumelanin, leaving only phaeomelanin (red pigment).

All equine coat colors are based off of one of the two colors, Black or Red(chestnut). Genetically, black is represented by E and red by e. Black is dominant over red. As such, all reds are homozygous* recessive (ee). Black horses can be either heterozygous*(Ee) or homozygous dominant (EE).

As far as shades go, there are a few different variations on black, namely blue-black or true, non-fading black, and fading black, which gets a yellowish brown cast to the coat when kept outside. Chestnuts however, can come in shades that range from nearly palomino looking to nearly black. Chestnuts can also have flaxen manes and tails, seen on any shade.

This brings us to...

Our First Contest!

What we'd like to see is your portrayal of either a black or chestnut horse.

RULES***EDIT***


1. Two entries per person! One for each color.
2. White markings are allowed, but they can't go higher than the knee/hock, and face markings are restricted to a blaze. Future contests will be held for the wilder colors/patterns
3. ANY medium is allowed EXCEPT photography/photomanips. Digital, traditional, sculpture, etc. ^^
4. Entries MUST be your own work.
5. All entries MUST be in color.
6. Art must be done for this contest.
7. You can use one of or s lineart for the contest if you'd like as this is a color contest.

Due date will be October 25th!

Both Beauty and I have been trying to settle back into the rhythm of Centenary and as such have rarely been online long enough to check our own accounts, let alone the poor Equi-genes club!
